Walter Jack Research Library

Uncover Ashtabula County’s Rich History
Tucked inside of the Munger, the Walter Jack Research Library is host to the Society’s collection of books, important papers, historic records, and a huge variety of essays and other resources gathered over the years.
Walter Eugene Jack (1883–1966), a devoted historian and photographer from Ashtabula County, Ohio, spent his life capturing and preserving the stories of his community. Born in Pierpont on January 31, 1883, Jack became widely known for his historical articles, which were published in 16 newspapers like “Erie News” across the eastern United States, and for his photographs documenting local landmarks and events. He also authored the book Pioneer Stories of Ashtabula County, further cementing his role as a key voice in preserving the region’s past. In recognition of his lifelong dedication, the Ashtabula County Historical Society honored his legacy by naming their genealogical library the Walter Jack Memorial Library.
The Walter Jack Research Library is a treasure trove of Ashtabula County’s past, preserving rare documents, maps, photographs, and historical records that tell the story of our region. Whether you’re a dedicated historian, a genealogist tracing your roots, or simply a lover of local history, our collection offers unparalleled insights into the past.
Currently, ACHS is engaging in a complete inventory of the materials at Walter Jack, with a long-term goal of creating a digital repository. Members have unlimited access to the library, and will also enjoy free access to digital materials as they come available.
